Membership in the AAA entitles members the opportunity to hang their original paintings in the Martin Polin Community Room of the Atascadero Library and/or display their three-dimensional work. A new exhibit is presented every three months, beginning in February. The gallery is open most Saturdays from 11 am to 3 pm. Members serve as host/hostess and are available to answer questions. A Scholarship Award is given each year to a local graduating high school senior with demonstrated art ability and plans to enroll in further art study. |
The public is invited to attend an art demonstration at the monthly meetings of the association on the second monday of each month (7 pm in the library community room). Exceptions are: (1) August - annual picnic/BBQ and (2) December - Holiday dinner. Picnic and Holiday dinner dates to be announced. |
Brief History1947A small group of artists and friends met in the lobby of the Carlton Hotel and organized the Atascadero Art Club. Charter members were Effie Carmack, Frances Joslyn, Emily Thom, Mona Dodd, Mrs. Proudfit, Mrs. Ray Humphrey, Frank Frandsen and Al Johnson who was elected President. 1948The Club held its first show in the lobby and dining room of the Carlton Hotel which featured works in oils, watercolors, pen and ink, tempera, charcoal plus china painting. 1949The Club held its second exhibit in the Boy Scout Building. 1950 & 1951The third and fourth exhibits were again held in the Carlton Hotel. ----Art Club members Frances Joslyn and Emily Thom instructed a children's class called the Junior Creative Class. Mrs. Joslyn and Mr. Johnson furnished the necessary art materials the first year with the Youth committee sponsoring the second and the third years with $60 and $100 when the value of the work of the children was seen. One of the children in this program was Ken Gouff who is still a member of the AAA. Mr. Gouff is an accomplished painter and cartoonist. He designed the logo for Atascadero when it became a city in 1997. 1951-1959For several years there were shows in the Sunken Gardens. 1959Esther Dean and Esther Schactel organized the first Fall Art Festival which was held annually on the third week end in September. This continued for several years with painters from all parts of California competing for ribbons. 1961Tom Goff, a talented artist from La Jolla, moved to Atascadero and started the Mother's Day weekend Art mart in the Sunken Gardens. This art exhibit continued until 1994. 1963The Club was incorporated in March. Board members were Clyde W. Simmons, Ernest Whitaker, Thomas Goff, Francis Henderson and Maybelle Frandsen. The President was Ernest Morris and Marian Hart was Secretary. 1995The Club changed its name to Atascadero Art Association in April. |
Bylaws and RulesRationaleThe Atascadero Art Association bylaws and rules were last updated in October of 2005. Because changes to the bylaws require a vote of the membership and a mailing of the latest copy of the bylaws to the appropriate state agency, the review committee attempted to revise the bylaws such that the board would have the flexibility to act without feeling their hands were tied behind them and also minimize the repeated burden of state notification. |
