paper mosaic

"Create your own extraordinary paper mosaic tiles. Using simple tools, paint and paper you'll learn to create tiles, then transform them to mosaic masterpieces. This fun, original art medium is easy to learn and one of the most versatile crafts."

The history of mosaic goes back 4,000 years or more with the use of terra cotta cones which were pushed point first into a background of mud. Mosaic evolved into using of glass and ceramic, an art form that is loved by many today, but materials can be expensive. Instead of constructing mosaics using glass, stained glass artist Judy Ann Maynard demonstrated the art of making mosaic using paper tile. She adheres paper such as Chinese rice paper or even painted paper bags to poster board using a spray adhesive. She does not use magazines as the color may not be permanent. Using a handheld rotary paper cutter, she cuts these stiffened papers into strips. Size may vary according to her need. The strips are then cut to mimic glass tile.

Often, Judy develops patterns and designs as she works. The paper tile are placed on clear contact paper leaving a space between tiles. She uses Mod Podge glue, a water based sealer and finish all-in-one. She covers a variety of objects such as picture frames, flower pots and backsplashes. Their base color will show through the clear contact paper and mimic tile. Judy teaches her methods in a variety of workshops. For more information call Judy Maynard at Saiku Studios, (805) 927-5963.
